abstract

in this study, slag penetration into a magnesia refractory monolithic was investigated by the crucible test method. a synthetic calcium aluminate slag system has been used to study commercial magnesia mix refractory for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 hours at 1450°c and 1600°c. it has been shown that the penetration rate is controlled by a diffusion mechanism at 1450°c. in this case, capillaries are the main channels of initial slag penetration into the refractory. in the penetration process of the slag system, calcium silicate was formed on the surfaces of mgo grains at 1450°c and around them by reaction between grain boundary and mayenite, as a main phase of slag with a low melting point. dissolution of the refractory components in the slag could be supported by the penetration process at 1600°c. in this case, dissolution of the refractory components in the slag not only makes new open channels, but also changes the local slag composition, resulting in an increase in surface tension and viscosity of the slag.

Application practice of BOF Slag tailings in steelmaking process

The present paper introduces the steel production and BOF slag processing techniques in Steelmaking Sector of Bayuquan Iron and Steel Subsidiary, Ansteel. The technology of slag tailings utilization has been developed under the consideration of the properties of slag tailing and the characteristics of slag forming in BOF steelmaking operation practice. The processing of the BOF slag includes ho...

RECYCLING PRACTICES OF SPENT MgO-C REFRACTORIES

The recycling options of spent MgO-C refractories from an electrical arc furnace (EAF) have been evaluated. The economic, quality of spent refractories and products made from it, the ease of implementation of a recycling practice and the interest of steel melt shops were considered. It was decided that the best option of most EAF shops would be to recycle spent MgO-C refractory as a foaming sla...

Processing and Reusing Technologies for Steelmaking Slag

About 40 million tons of steel slag a year, which is the by-product of iron and steel manufacture, is generated in Japan and the almost all the slag is reused for the materials, e.g. cement raw material, road base course material and civil engineering material, by effectively utilizing its characteristics such as chemical components and mechanical properties. Most of its purposes of uses are to...

The Effect of Slag Modeling to Improve Steelmaking Processes

This paper attempts to illustrate the benefits of using slag models based on the thermodynamics of steelmaking reactions and the multi-dimensional modeling of phase equilibria. The use of mass balance calculations and the application of these personal computer-based slag models to the refinement of standard operating procedures can simultaneously result in shorter process times, more predictabl...
